Teeth grinding, also known as Bruxism, is a common condition that can cause an aching or tired jaw, tension headaches hypersensitive teeth and tooth wear.

Many sufferers are not aware that anti-wrinkle injection therapy can be used to provide temporary relief from Bruxism. It involves a small number of muscle relaxant injections into the masseter muscle, the large muscle at the angle of the jaw responsible for jaw clenching.  This weakens the muscles just enough to help prevent the individual from clenching or grinding their teeth.

When do I know the right time to seek treatment for Bruxism?

We recommend that you book an appointment to discuss your treatment options as soon as you notice that your teeth grinding is affecting your overall well being or general teeth health.

WHAT IS BRUXISM?

Bruxism is an unconscious condition where sufferers grind or clench their teeth.  It can occur when you’re awake or during sleep and lead to side effects such as headaches, jaw pain, jaw tension and the wearing down of teeth.

CAN TEETH GRINDING AFFECT YOUR FACE SHAPE?

Yes, the excessive exercise your jaw and facial muscles get when grinding your teeth can create a more squarer-looking facial appearance.

HOW LONG DOES TEETH GRINDING TREATMENT LAST?

In most cases, you can expect relief from teeth grinding for approximately three to six months.

What to expect

Treatment involves a small number of muscle relaxant injections.  These injections are the same as our anti-wrinkle injectables.  Essentially, they help weaken the masticatory (chewing) muscles at the side of the jaw to reduce involuntary jaw-grinding without affecting the ability to talk, chew and smile.

The clinical procedure usually takes around 10-20 minutes, with the beneficial effects of the injections usually noticed after two to seven days.  The treatment typically alleviates teeth grinding for up to three to six months.  However, this is dependent on the dose administered, the individual and how quickly the body naturally metabolises.

In some cases, teeth grinding can lead to a more square looking shaped face. For clients that are conscious of this, in addition to the anti-wrinkle treatment, dermal fillers can also be used to help create a more oval-shaped face and softer-looking appearance.
