Micropen microneedling and RF microneedling

Collagen regeneration therapy to help address fine lines, acne scarring, skin texture and more.

Encourage the collagen production responsible for a clear, youthful complexion

At Lumea Aesthetics we offer two treatments in non-invasive microneedling: the standard micropen microneedling that you may have already encountered, and radiofrequency (RF) microneedling.

Micropen microneedling

This is a type of skin needling therapy involving tiny needles penetrating the skin to create small wounds that stimulate your natural healing process. Encouraging collagen production and skin regeneration, the treatment helps to address a large range of skin concerns like acne scars, crepey skin and fine lines.

As an added bonus, skin needling can greatly improve the absorption and effectiveness of your skincare actives, as they can penetrate deeper through the micro channels created by the needling, particularly hyaluronic acid and some chemical peels.

You’ll notice skin tightening and toning effects within days of the first treatment. More pronounced results can take up to eight weeks, following your skin’s own healing process.

RF microneedling

We’re thrilled to have the Secret DUO therapy device in our Collingwood clinic which, in the opinion of our experienced doctor, gives our patients a flexible, evidence-based multi-treatment option, and overall is quite an astounding, non-invasive advancement in treating many of the skin concerns we see, all with minimum downtime.

It features a radiofrequency (RF) microneedling handpiece that delivers two types of microdamage: that from the needles themselves, as well as radiofrequency energy through their tips deeper into the skin. The combination of microneedling with RF energy is where the amazing results begin, as the RF is targeted at the optimum temperature that delivers controlled microtrauma to the cells precisely where your area of concern is.

This microdamage on a cellular level then provokes a wound-healing response, making way for newly healed, smoother and tighter skin, all while bypassing the epidermis so there’s no damage to the top layer of your skin. Together, the radiofrequency and microneedling boosts the effectiveness of each other, as the needles allow precise delivery of the heat into the dermis where the collagen is, while radiofrequency increases the amount and level of controlled damage the needles apply – kickstarting that healing process to reveal new skin.

Our RF microneedling Secret DUO device can also deliver the latest in laser skin resurfacing, which is gentle on the skin and requires no downtime. These two treatments work brilliantly together; the microneedling targets more surface-level areas like sun damage, large pores and acne scarring, and the laser focuses on collagen building, plumping and smoothing from within.

Is microneedling right for me?

Microneedling is a more effective form of skin needling where a pen handpiece containing dozens of tiny needles is passed over the skin, creating thousands of microscopic, shallow lesions. This encourages your body to generate more collagen and elastin, making way for new, smoother and brighter skin, as well as being an effective treatment for stretch marks.

What is the difference between traditional microneedling and RF microneedling?

Traditional microneedling is an effective treatment in its own right, which we offer at our Collingwood clinic as another option to boost collagen in the skin, suitable for all budgets and is overall a more mild treatment.

RF microneedling on the other hand, uses two types of microdamage: the stamping penetration of the needles and then the heat emitted from the tips once in the skin. This combination allows our therapists to control the exact temperature and depth of the treatment, making it the gold standard in addressing scarring and tightening the skin, for all skin tones and types.

Should I also get the laser resurfacing with the secret duo device?

The laser resurfacing is a fantastic treatment by itself, but also as an add-on option to the RF microneedling treatment, especially for patients who are concerned with premature ageing and overall skin health.

RF microneedling treats all kinds of texture concerns alongside collagen renewal deep within the skin, while the laser works on plumping, fine lines and hydration, giving a healthy glow.

When you combine these two treatments together that Secret DUO offers, you’re treating a range of concerns all in the same session.

Do these treatments hurt?

For both microneedling and RF microneedling, we apply a topical anesthetic to the treatment area just before the procedure, making it very comfortable. Most patients find microneedling very tolerable, but we are also able to control the settings to suit your comfort level, including administering a nerve block if you need it.

How many treatments will I need?

For the best results, we generally recommend three or four treatments and one top-up course. We can then review your progress to assess what is needed to maintain your new glowing skin.

How long will the results last?

When treating specific areas with scarring, the results are generally permanent, unless of course new scars form.

When treating general anti-ageing concerns like dullness, large pores, skin tone, skin texture and fine lines, the results will generally last around three to four months before a top-up course of treatments is recommended, adding to the results of your previous visits.

What areas can be treated?

Microneedling is often used across the entire face, but can most certainly be a treatment for specific localised areas. It works particularly well for acne scars and other small depressed scars, as well as hard-to-treat areas like lines around the mouth, under the eyes or cheek wrinkles.

How should I prepare for a microneedling treatment?

There are a few steps you can take before your treatment to ensure it is as effective as possible, with minimum side effects.

It’s important to not come in wearing any makeup or fake tan, and to ensure you haven’t had any recent tanning treatment. You’ll also need to let us know if you’re sunburnt or have an active cold sore. We’ll also ask you to cease using skincare actives one week prior to treatment, and nothing else that irritates the skin such as laser, intense pulsed light (IPL) or chemical peel treatments. After treatment we recommend simply giving your skin lots of love and rest as it will be more sensitive; and you should be doing anyway, but wearing lots of sunscreen to prepare and protect your skin while it heals is an absolute must.

We also suggest not taking certain over-the-counter medication and supplements within one week before treatment that thin the blood as these an increase your chances of bruising; we will discuss this with your in detail prior to treatment.

Take a step toward confidence with skin treatments that recapture a healthy inner glow.

What to expect during a microneedling treatment

It all starts with a personal consultation, where we’ll assess your skin, your goals and your medical history.

If the procedure is right for you, we start by applying a topical numbing cream. Then you’re ready for the procedure itself which typically takes 30-45 minutes depending on the size of the treatment area.

You may experience a slight sensation of heat and prickling, though it’s common for many patients to not feel anything.

After the treatment, there may be some redness and possibly some swelling especially around the sensitive eye area which should subside in an hour or two. Your skin can also be a little itchy for a few days but this is also normal.

While skincare products will penetrate deeper after treatment, your skin is likely to be more sensitive so depending on your circumstances we may recommend a delay in resuming with potent actives like retinoids, vitamin C and exfoliating acids for a few days.

The beauty of this procedure is that you can expect both short and long term results. After two days the skin feels smoother and fresh.  However, you’ll experience the full benefits after around four treatments, and several weeks later when the collagen has finished rebuilding.
