Laser Resurfacing

The latest in skin resurfacing technology works hard against wrinkles and crepey skin, while boosting collagen and elasticity.

A non-invasive, gentle laser treatment that breathes new life into tired, dull or damaged skin.

Laser resurfacing is a common and highly effective treatment loved by patients globally; you may also know it as laser surgery or laser peeling. This style of cosmetic treatment uses energy to penetrate through layers of the skin causing microdamage, which then heals into new, fresh skin with reduced appearance of redness and wrinkles, that feels firmer and more hydrated and plump.

Expect very different results and periods of downtime with all the different laser device options available however, which is why our doctor-led team has selected the innovative Secret DUO for our patients. We feel this device represents a truly remarkable advancement in resurfacing technology, balancing the fantastic results we want to see with the least amount of downtime possible.

The Secret DUO’s 1540nm fractional erbium glass laser combines several laser technologies, that is both non-invasive and non-ablative, working deeply within the skin while preserving the superficial layer of the epidermis. There’s no two-week downtime off from work treating open wounds as you’ll often get from a traditional ablative laser – simply the best results possible with only some temporary redness as a side effect.

‘1540nm fractional erbium glass laser’ is quite the mouthful however, but each part is an important piece that works toward these fantastic results. The laser works at a 1540 nanometre wavelength within the skin; which has a deeper tissue effect than most traditional lasers. ‘Fractional’ refers to the laser beams themselves, which can be customised to target a small or large percentage of the skin’s surface offering a solution for all patients alike.

The Secret DUO device also delivers radiofrequency (RF) microneedling treatments, which can work in tandem brilliantly with laser resurfacing. Read more about the benefits of RF microneedling here.

VEINCURE

The Secret DUO device can also be used to treat spider veins. The term “Spider Veins” refers to small red or blueish veins on the surface of the skin that resemble the strands or circular pattern of a spider web. They can appear anywhere on the body but are most common on the legs and face. Spider veins don’t heal or fade with time. Thankfully they are not dangerous, but most people find them unsightly and want to cover them up or reduce their appearance. Veincure is used to treat veins that are red in color. The Secret DUO produces radiofrequency energy that heats up and shuts down the capillaries. The small surface spider capillaries can be identified and targeted. A tiny probe is inserted superficially into the skin and short pulses of radio-frequency heat are delivered. Multiple sessions may be required to achieve the desired effect. Most common areas to be treated are the face, especially nose, cheeks and chin. Our skin therapist will assess your skin and discuss a treatment plan with you. She will identify which veins are suitable to be targeted and advise you on the number of sessions that mat be required. The procedure may also be combined with our Erbium glass laser to reduce general background redness if that is one of your concerns.

Is laser resurfacing right for me?

Our fractional erbium glass laser is more gentle than traditional resurfacing lasers, working underneath the skin instead of stripping the surface. It’s an effective option for all skin types and tones looking for a plumping and firming result. Moreover, the results around many common serious skin concerns is second-to-none, brilliantly reducing the appearance of redness, fine lines and wrinkles.

Laser resurfacing also works well in combination with chemical peels, medical-grade skincare, skin boosters and microneedling to achieve the results you’re after, which we can guide you through with your tailored treatment plan.

What areas can be treated?

Laser resurfacing is a sought after treatment for patients looking for texture and tightening improvement on  the face. Our patients have also seen amazing results when face treatments are combined with the neck and décolletage. We can also treat the chest area and the back of your hands, particularly since it’s a great option for skin concerns in these areas too, like stretch marks, crepey skin and uneven skin tone.

What skin types can be treated?

We can treat all skin types and skin shades with our laser resurfacing treatment. Traditional laser treatments used to not be recommended for anyone with olive or darker skin because of the heightened risk of hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation, but this is not the case with the device we use. At Lumea, this treatment works deeper within the skin instead of ablating the surface, meaning finally everyone can benefit!

When will I see results?

Some patients will start to see a result in as little as two weeks, however the full collagen cycle is around 12 weeks, where the skin heals and the new collagen and elastin deeper within the skin does its magic. The best results are usually then seen after around three months, particularly after a course of treatments for an accumulative effect.

Is laser resurfacing painful?

We do use a topical numbing cream so patients find the process very tolerable, but we are certainly able to control the settings to suit your comfort level, while still effectively treating your skin concerns. The most commonly reported side effects is some redness which usually resolves a few days after treatment.

How should I prepare for treatment?

It’s vitally important that you wear high-protection sunscreen every day in the lead up to your appointment and avoid direct sun exposure, at least one week prior and one week after treatment. We also recommend you stop using vitamin A (retinols) at least three days before and after treatment. Our experienced therapists will guide you through everything you need to know.

Our ‘natural is best’ approach means our laser resurfacing therapy brings forth the best version of your own skin.

What to expect during an erbium laser resurfacing treatment

Once you’ve lain back and are comfortable, our first step is to thoroughly cleanse your skin. We then apply a topical numbing cream to minimise any discomfort.

The laser itself, delivered via a hand-held device connected to the Secret DUO, will feel warm, which may build over time throughout the treatment but never to any level of discomfort. It usually simply feels like a warm bath across the treatment area.

During treatment as the glass laser is passed over the skin, the laser wavelength is both attracted to and absorbed by water in the tissue, kickstarting a rapid growth of new collagen and elastin deep within the skin.

Right after the treatment, you may feel warmth in the area for 10 or 15 minutes, as well as some slight redness which usually settles within an hour.

There should be little discomfort throughout the treatment, and next to no downtime.
