LED Light Therapy

Specialised treatments to minimise facial wrinkles or achieve a slimming effect.

A pain-free, non-invasive, soothing and rejuvenating skin treatment.

LED (light-emitting diode) phototherapy is a non-invasive, needle-free skin treatment with next to no downtime – all you need to do is sit back and let light do all the work. LED light therapy uses the specific, non-thermal wavelengths of different coloured light to target various skin concerns like acne scarring, redness, unhealed wounds and can also offer overall skin rejuvenation and anti-ageing.

It may be incredible that something as simple and intangible like light wavelengths can have such an impact on your skin, but as our patients know, we only offer scientifically-proven treatments approved by our doctor-led team that deliver results.

In fact, the benefits of LED light were first uncovered by NASA in the 1980s for growing plants faster on shuttle missions, when its wound-healing effects were discovered quite by accident.  As with many of our evidence-based treatment options, LED light initially began with medicinal use which expanded into the therapeutic and cosmetic.

At Lumea Aesthetics, we offer red, blue and infrared LED light treatments – with each penetrating to a different depth and therefore having a very individual effect on the skin.

Blue LED light therapy – to treat acne and inflammation

Blue LED light has long been known for its antibacterial properties. Our cosmetic device delivers blue LED light which has the same ability to target the dermis layer of the skin, without any of the harmful side effects you get with UV rays from the sun.

Blue LED light therapy is most impressive when it comes to treating acne, specifically targeting acne-causing bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes). Safe for all skin types, blue LED light targets the appearance and severity of acne, improving skin clarity and reduces sebaceous hyperplasia, or enlarged oil glands, while destroying problem bacterial cells that cause an overproduction of oils and inflammation. The depth blue LED light works in the skin also means it complements any medical-grade topical acne treatments.

Red LED light therapy – for general anti-ageing

The red wavelength light treats a wide array of skin concerns, both aesthetic and medical. This band of light near the end of the visible spectrum boosts cellular health, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin deep within the skin, making it an excellent treatment option for anti-ageing. Penetrating deeper than blue light, cell turnover is increased while reducing the signs of age spots, discolouration, fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin tone, texture and laxity.

Red LED light also boasts anti-inflammatory and healing properties, it can reduce the severity of Inflammation from injuries or muscle pain can also be addressed, helping to provide relief and promoting healing.

Near infrared – for pain relief and wound healing

Invisible to the naked human eye, infrared LED light has no distinct colour and sits just after red light on the light wave spectrum, penetrating deeper than any other light therapy. Its regenerative effects are well-documented to support your body’s natural healing processes.

The treatment stimulates blood circulation and cell oxygenation, reducing inflammation and speeding up healing of lesions, scars and wounds, including severe cystic acne. By working deep under the skin to the muscle layer and even to the bone, infrared LED light can also bring relief to muscle, joint and arthritis pain.

It’s often not just about selecting one over the other either; depending on your needs, two of the above wavelengths complement each other well. For example, combining the antibacterial effects of blue light with the regenerative properties of red can have a significant impact on acne and other skin conditions like rosacea and psoriasis.

Is LED light therapy right for me?

LED light therapy works for all skin types and tones, across a range of concerns and medical conditions. As well as being non-invasive with little recovery time, LED light therapy emits very little heat, and so does no damage to the surface of the skin.

It works well alongside other treatments that focus on the health and rejuvenation of your skin, including laser resurfacing, microneedling, skin peels and skin boosters, as well as a medical-grade skincare routine targeted to your needs

WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

Anywhere on the body can benefit from LED light therapy, which is great for those seeking the wound-healing effects as the device can treat anywhere it’s needed.

However, the most common areas we see this treatment used are the face, neck and décolletage, as well as the back for acne patients.

DOES LED LIGHT THERAPY HURT?

You can expect no pain or even discomfort from a LED light treatment. It’s sometimes known as a ‘cold laser’ due to there being no heat involved, and is known to be a pleasant and relaxing experience.

IS LED LIGHT THERAPY SAFE?

This is an extremely safe, low-risk treatment. The light frequencies used are readily absorbed into the skin and do not contain any harmful ultraviolet rays. The treatment is also non-ablative, so it does no damage to the surface of the skin.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

Being dose-dependent, all patients will see a cumulative effect with frequent treatments over a period of time – often around six to eight sessions once or twice a week to see the desired result. However this depends on your skin and your goals; we’ll develop a tailored treatment plan with you. Results could need to be maintained with follow-up treatments around every three or six to twelve months, depending on the concern we’re targeting.

Part of your treatment plan will also likely include ongoing sun protection and a prescribed skincare regime, which is important to help make your results last.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

You’ll notice an improvement in how your skin looks and feels immediately after a treatment, but the full effects will only be seen after completing a series of visits to our clinic. The results last around six months to a year; as skin cells turnover and ageing continues or further breakouts occur, maintenance is often required.

Our experienced team abide by the philosophy of ‘natural is best’.

What to expect during a LED light therapy session?

Treatment sessions are quick, simple and pain-free with our medical-grade LED light treatment device.

After lying back, we cleanse your skin then apply goggles to protect your eyes. The LED light is then applied using our device – the LED lights will activate and you’ll feel very little, or in some cases a slight warm sensation. Your skin may be a little red after the treatment, but this is only due to increased blood flow.

Total treatment time varies but usually around 10 to 20 minutes is sufficient for most skin types and concerns – it’s easy to fit treatments around a busy schedule.

Anti-wrinkle injected products are made of a specific protein, which is metabolised naturally by the body. The effects of the anti-wrinkle injections usually last three to six months, but it can vary depending on the area injected and  how the client metabolises the product.

It should also be noted that deep ‘static’ lines, or lines that are present at rest, may also require the use of dermal fillers, skin boosters or medical skin peels to help soften their appearance. We will discuss your own particular requirements at your consultation prior to moving forward with any treatment, to ensure you are clear about your options and your expected results.
